ETH 2.0 client Nimbus receives another $650K from the Ethereum Foundation

Ethereum infrastructure project Nimbus has received a $650,000 grant from the Ethereum Foundation to continue its work on Ethereum 2.0, the next major update to the protocol.

Founded in 2018 by The Status Network, Nimbus is building an ETH2.0 client and opened its first testnet in March 2019. In September, it finalized a number of ETH2.0 epochs with Lighthouse, another ETH2.0 client implementation team, and created a networking spec with the latter.

Nimbus first received a grant from the Ethereum Foundation in March 2018 as a part of the Ethereum Foundation Scalability Research and Development Subsidy Program. The latest grant would bring the foundation’s total commitment to Nimbus to $1.65 million.

The team plans to use the fresh funding to onboard more engineers to develop an experimental phase 1 implementation, research distributed storage solutions for ETH2.0 light clients, prepare for the implementation of ETH2.0 layer 2, among solving technical challenges, Nimbus told The Block.

“We have been making good progress on Nimbus and this grant enables us to not only continue our R&D of the ETH2.0 client, but also explore additional areas of focus which can make Nimbus an even more versatile and important piece of infrastructure and accelerate the upcoming development phases,” head of research at Nimbus, Jacek Sieka, said in a press statement shared with The Block.
