Carrefour, Nestlé put instant mashed potatoes on the blockchain

French supermarket Carrefour and Swiss food conglomerate Nestlé have announced in a press release they are putting their instant mashed potato Mousline on a blockchain. By scanning a QR code, customers will be able to learn about the supply chain and production of Mousline.

“Using the QR code on the product’s packaging, each consumer will be able to use a secure platform on their smartphone to access information on the production supply chain, including the varieties of potato used, the dates and places of manufacture, information on quality control, and places and dates of storage before the product reaches the shelves,” the press release reads.

Both Carrefour and Nestlé are members of the IBM Food Trust platform, along with companies like U.S. retail giant Walmart. Just last week, another American retailer, Albertsons, announced joining the platform as well.

Since joining IBM Food Trust in October, Carrefour has already rolled out other products from its Quality Line on the blockchain, including fresh micro-filtered full-fat milk, oranges, and Auvergne chicken.
